How much do the meds cost?

Anywhere from $1,000 to $3,000 or more per month per person.

Anywhere from $1,000 to $3,000 or more per month per person.

The cost for a month of HIV meds for the average individual runs from $1,000 to $3,000+ per month.

Your out-of-pocket costs depends on how many drugs you're taking and you're medical insurance plan. If you have a 20% drug co-pay, you could still be looking at $200 to $600+ per month.

You also need to factor in two trips each month. One to get blood taken for the monitoring tests ($1,200 more or less). And the second to get the results and be checked out by a Doctor or Nurse Practitioner ($100-$300). (Sometimes referred to as the 3,000 mile checkup.)

For those that don't have health insurance, there is Ryan White/ADAP and AHCCCS here in Arizona to help cover your costs. Other states have different options, ranging from good-to-great to bad-and-ugly.

And for some, their health insurance is so poor that we've told them they would be better off changing jobs. It's sad when you have to tell someone "you can't afford to work there".
